got my Duo at the end of July from BBB.
good but too noisy to sit on the desk next to the PC.
netgear even swapped the unit when i complained, but the replacement is the same. annoying hum; probably the fan.
netgear now say thats how it is .. poor for a SOHO device.

Performance isnt up with the Synology, but considering the price differential it isnt far behind. The chassis was fitted with two Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 drives giving speeds of 19MB/sec and 11MB/sec for large and small files. Read speeds soared to 28MB/sec for large files and 17MB/sec for small files.
The web interface is simple, with clear information about relevant sections. There are iTunes, UPnP media and print servers, and you get the facility for user accounts, user quotas and the capability to dabble with web hosting.
At this price, the ReadyNAS Duo is a bargain. It isnt quite the fastest, or the most fully featured, but for all-round performance at a mid-range price its very hard to beat.

The Duo is no slouch in the performance stakes either. Copying a 690MB video file over Gigabit Ethernet returned average read and write speeds of 24.6MB/sec and 17.3MB/sec. FTP speeds are on the money as copying the same file using the FileZilla utility returned good read and write rates of 21MB/sec and 11.5MB/sec.
Verdict
The ReadyNAS Duo takes everything that makes the NV+ a great NAS appliance and packs it into a pint-sized desktop unit. Its an affordable choice for home users, delivers good overall performance and offers a wealth of multimedia features into the bargain.

The ReadyNAS is a tiny beauty, taking up less space than most external hard disks that feature just one drive.
The handy swing door at the front exposes both drive bays and out of the box theres one free bay for you to add another SATA unit. Netgears X-RAID technology can be used to create a mirrored array.
As well as the Ethernet port at the back theres two USB2 ports and one at the front for ease of access, which ties in well with the one-touch backup option.

Netgear's Readynas Duo looks just like a real server, only scaled down like a toy car. It keeps many of the real server features such as hot-swappable disks, so you can remove the hard drives even when its turned on.
After making a frightening amount of noise starting up, the Readynas Duo quietened down to a barely audible level. Its quite heavy for a two-drive Nas, with a robust swing-out door with magnetic latch revealing both hard disk cages. As well as easy hard drive access, it also has the best configuration process of the group. Once you've stepped over the curious flaw whereby you have to log in twice to configure it, you get to a superb interface with quick responses and bundles of features.
Scheduled on/off allows you to choose the days or times when it should turn itself off to conserve power (we measured a 0.5W power draw during its hibernation). Hard disk power management is good and the Readynas has lots of other server applications, including iTunes, FTP and printer server Linux users will be pleased with its NFS support for shared folders. It's easy to start Bittorrent and HTTP downloads on the Nas and it can also host your own website (although it takes a bit of persistence to do so).
DLNA functionality was excellent. It streamed high-definition content to a Playstation 3 well and even managed to fast forward through an 8.5GB video - something few other Nas boxes managed. Xbox 360 campatibility was good and read and write speeds were the best of the single drive Nas units here.

I have used Synology Products in the past.
I read a lot of reviews about this one.
I have found some of the Synology products do not work very well with a mixed Network of Macs and Pcs.
This Box is perfect, set up with DynDns its accessible anywhere and every computer on the network communicates with it perfectly.
Smb, cif, afp, all supported. Fast too.

I've been a netgear SC101 user for about three years and to be honest I never had any trouble with it, other than the fact that the device was somewhat slow, and that the software client slowed the desktop PC down.
I'd seen reviews for the ReadyNAS, all of which were very positive (see Trusted Reviews if you want to do your own research), so I bought one from Broadband Buyer about a week ago. The ReadyNAS works on two levels - as a simple network storage device that can be used to store data and as a print server, and at a more complex level, which I confess to not having mastered as yet.
The device is fairly easy to set up - took about an hour from opening the box and the biggest revelation is the X-RAID technolgy, which will build a RAID when a second disc is intalled to a single disc only device (which is as the ReadyNAS ships).
I've had this a week and I really love it already!
