I bought this router from a retail store and initial impressions were very good. The built in modem synced at 0.5mbps higher than my previous Buffalo device and transfer speeds between two wireless n connected devices were very quick. This is probably why the unit receives good reviews from magazines/ web sites.

HOWEVER, after using the device constantly for a few weeks, a horrible problem surfaced. After random amounts of time (some times hours, sometimes a day or two), the router will suddenly switch on its Wireless Isolation mode. This prevents devices connected wirelessly from seeing each other. This means you cannot copy files from pc to pc, xbox media sharing will not work etc. I spent 3 weeks messing with settings, firmware etc to try and fix with no success. I did find out that I was not the only one with the problem, many people reporting the same thing and Linksys dont seem to care. Tried a replacement from the retail store just to be sure - same problem.

Stay well clear!

As with other Linksys routers weve seen, the WAG160N has in-depth QoS settings, so you can prioritise real-time sensitive traffic, such as VoIP, video and games. A number of games are preconfigured, but MSN Messenger, Skype and Yahoo! Messenger are the only preconfigured applications. You can add your own applications.

Access restrictions let you determine which computers can access which services, and you can filter websites by keyword and URL. These settings are easy to configure, but for parents looking to control their childrens internet access we recommend investing in dedicated web-filtering software.

Performance was good, particularly when using Linksyss WUSB600N USB wireless adaptor (£27 including VAT). This produced some of the fastest transfer speeds weve ever seen, with 81.3Mbit/s at 1m, which is close to 100Mbit/s Ethernet speed. At 10m we achieved speeds of 55Mbit/s, which is easily enough for HD video streaming and large file transfers.

With its low cost, high performance and excellent configuration options, the WAG160N-UK wins our Best Buy award.

Bought one of these to replace my trusty old D-Link which had died. What a mistake. From previous experience I avoided using the CD Rom but managed to get basic running easily enough.
The problems started when I tried to put WPA security on. XP worked fine but Vista didnt, then vica versa. Absolute nightmare. Eventually got that working but have never ever been able to connect my Nokia E61i phone except with no security.
During hot weather the connection (wired & wireless) drops
intermittently and the unit runs so hot its uncomfortable to pick up to reset it (which I have to do frequently). When the connection drops all lights "rotate" and it has to be powered off - no help anywhere on what this means.

Admin reporting is flaky: some machines are flagged as connected when they arent and others dont show up even though they are. Finally, my home network vanishes and reappears randomly. Firmware recently updated to .15 - no change.

Its a nice piece of kit, but is does get hot. the venting needs improving.

It does NOT allow for IP address reservation (IP to MAC functionality) which is disappointing.

But most of all, the LELA software totally messed up *all* the network adapters on my main PC (it has 6 in all) which took me a good evenings work to restore. Unless you really need it I wouldnt use the LELA functionality (LinkSYS EasyLink Assistant ? something like that anyway).

Supplied software makes setup and configuration easy even for the non-technical user. Wireless works well with latest firmware (1.00.15 at time of writing) What is very disappointing however is the lack of means to properly configure the firewall. You are unable to add or remove rules of any kind limited simply to adding port forwards. Logging is also fairly poor.

Ideal for the basic home user but a fairly rubbish product if you want to do anything remotely technical. DG834v4 is probably a better all-round choice at this level of product.

I was also seeing this problem but I got hold of a pre lease version of the latest firmare which has been officially released today v1.00.14. It seems to have fixed the issues I was having i.e. clients dropping connection, adsl dropping and shared file browsing by ip address but not computer name.

This apart I have been streaming HD video across the network flawlessly so I give this router a big thumbs up with the new firmware installed.

Bought this router in May-2009 because of its price/feature/brand offering. Was easy to install and use and also looks good. However I returned it the next day after I bought it because it suffers the following problems:-
1) Heats up significantly during operation. Surely not a good thing for the components inside nor the radio signals.

2) Drops the wireless connection fairly regularly and randomly for no apparent reason. The connection drops roughly once every 2 hours. Not helpful if you are in the middle of downloading a large file from the internet.

Could have been a fantastic product had Cisco/Linksys applied little bit more quality assurance before releasing this product.

The router is up and running and does everything flawlessly. No major problems once I ditched the setup wizard (supplied on CD). Running on a standard Intel-based PC, the wizard found a modem on my network that didn't exist! Then it kept stopping prematurely and asking me to reboot. Once I gave up and followed the manual setup routine in the Quick Installation guide everything worked perfectly. It's so easy to set up manually on a BT broadband line that I see little use for the wizard anyway. In summary, a great router.

And what terrific service from Broadbandbuyer! Ordered one afternoon, arrived the following lunchtime using standard Royal Mail service (1-5 days). Fantastic.

I connected to my ISPs website which accepted the connection and I could then proceed as normal. Maybe this is just a Mac thing again.

Bought this wireless router to improve wireless reception around the house (4 bedrooms, very solid walls) previously using an old BeBox a Speed Touch 716. BBB.Co.UK tech support recommended this for its wireless range. I was not too concerned about the PS3 download speed issue as I use it just for Bluray and went ahead.

I installed and set up the router as per the instructions on the BeForum wiki site (did not use the CD) and was surprised to find my download speed went from 12.5mb to 13.5mb as a result.

I had previously bought a good quality cable to connect the modem to the filter / splitter, but upgraded this with the Belkin cable from BBB.co.uk. This boosted speed and I now have 14.2mb.

Wireless range has improved, my PS3 has a rock solid connection, ipod Touch is fine, reception at another PC (with a legacy G card in it) is rock stable at 54mb. Yes the PS3 is slow, it took about 20 minutes to download its update, but the connection never drops as it used to do. So 5*s

I bought this on the strength of magazine lab tests and the enthusiasm of current users, but the reception range Im getting is extremely limited.

I had expected it to operate throughout the house, and maybe even outside to some extent, but the signal is picked up only 1. in the same room as the router, 2. in the room next to it, and 3. for a couple of metres down the corridor.

Now this may be because the house is an old one, built of stone with very thick interior and exterior walls, but I had thought that the Wireless-N specification would mean that this might not be a great drawback.

What should I be doing to get a better performance from the unit?

We were also impressed by the ease of installation. The CD-based wizard guides you through connecting cables, entering your ISP details, checking internet connectivity and choosing a name for your wireless network. The setup process includes a step for configuring wireless security and recommends WPA2 for the best protection. We hope other manufacturers follow suit.

Once this is done, Linksys EasyLink Advisor (LELA) is installed. This displays a visual map of your network, showing all the connected devices. If any are compatible with LELA - currently this applies only to certain Linksys models - you can choose from a list of options including Advanced Options, Change Password and Wireless Protection. LELA can also monitor your network and alert you to any new devices, potential problems and security breaches.

We were a little concerned about performance because of the internal antennas, which can't be changed for high-gain models. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the test results. At 1m, we saw 38.7Mbit/s when using Linksys's own WUSB300N USB adaptor, 50.4Mbit/s at 15m and a speedy 24Mbit/s at 25m. Speeds with our Centrino notebook were as expected, but we were happy to find that newer Centrino laptops with Draft-N WiFi, such as Acer's Aspire 8920G, worked flawlessly with the WAG160N. Speeds were roughly the same as with the WUSB300N.

Purchased one last week following the PCPro review.
I have set up many routers with no problems in the past. This was to replace my Belkin N1 Vision.
I dont want to go into great detail but after an hour of attempting to set this up using both manual methods and the CD Wizard I could NOT connect to the internet an any way shape or form. I was going to return it under RMA.
However I then decided to call Tech Support on the free 0800 number suppled. The support engineer was fantastic; she really knew her product and eventually enabled me to make an internet connection. I was on the phone to her for about half an hour. Without getting too technical, there was a problem with the IP address. Following advice, I have upgraded the Firmware to the lastest version - and now when reset to factory conditions it sets up like magic.A very fast connection and I can now give it a five star rating. The rating should really go to the Tech Support lady - who was the best I have ever encountered.

Two 2dBi gain aerials are built into the chassis, which adds to the clean look. We found that where the Linksys impresses most is in its software package and ease of setup.

In addition to the wizard-based setup on the router itself, you get an excellent disc-based wizard and Linksys EasyLink Advisor software. Once installed, the latter provides a clear diagram of the devices on your network and how they're linked together, depicting connected clients and information associated with them.

You can even click through and change settings from here - it's an excellent alternative to Vista's confusing collection of network adminstration tools and status views. This is a worthy winner!

My last D-Link routers ADSL connectivity started to cr@p-out so I bought this Linksys. The functionality looks great, just what I need!

It took me ages to get this to work with my 802.11b XP PCs, it would not let anything connect with any of the security settings enabled, not even WEP. I eventually got it working after upgrading the firmware. My Roku Soundbridge still wouldnt connect (it did once but only without the security enabled - Im not leaving security off!).

So I left my Roku out of the equation and tried to get my network working as normal. I use a lot of network services, but mainly Terminal Services. I could only get my PCs to see each other for 1 day. The next day all the PCs would still be connected (the could still use the internet), but they couldnt see each other, not even a PING got through.

So Ive had to given up and return the product, now looking for a new router. Any suggestions would be most welcome!
