I was sceptical and for three days the speed of my connection dropped dramatically, although the speed of my connection has always been up and down from highs of 3.5 to the latest low of 0.75!

Then suddenly the speed increased to a consitent 4.3 give or take. This is amazing. I am not getting the doubling mentioned elsewhere, but I have had a very good improvement of 30%. But the best thing has been the apparent consistency. Worth every penny.

I read the reviews, check my master socket. Then I got my credit card out and decided to buy the I-Plate from Broadbandbuyer.co.uk.

Well what do you know, I received it a day later and plugged it in. And presto.

I was getting 2700kbts/s before i plugged it in, after, it went to 3400kbts/s. So I decided to test the speed two days later and i was shocked it went up to 5400kbts/s and more reliable. Doubled the speed. WOW.

If you are thinking about buying one, then for under £10, dont think just buy.

Thanks for the excellent service broadbandbuyer. I will be using you again.

I have real problems on my cordless telephone with interferance so I was searching the Internet for solutions - I spotted the BT I-Plate. Designed to speed up broadband by combatting interferance generated within the house I though it might just combat the problem with my phone - I never expected it to actually speed up my connection. Guess what? Didnt help my phone problem one bit but BOY! did it boost my broadband - amazing!
I carried out the thre speed tests (as recommended) and got and average Download speed of 3.81Mb per second and 0.37Mb Upload. Set up the I-Plate (took 5 minutes) reconnected and ran the tests again. I was astounded! Download speed better than doubled to 7.95Mb and Upload speed better than doubled to .81Mb.
I dont know how this simple device performs its magic (ah! that must be it, magic!) but I can only say it was the best £5.99 I have spent for quite some time.

Theres no doubt this will work for some people but if you are over 5km from the exchange (and thats line length not stright line) dont get your hopes up too much, unless BT have updated your phone lines in the last 50 years or so. Although a sound device I dont see the benefits for those that really really need it. Personally I had abetter line speed connected directly to the master socket itself. As for stability its been as problematic as before. Bangladesh Telecom suck and ripoff Britain continues.

Being rural the best I ever get is 512k and that is a rare occasion in itself. So I am hoping for big things for this little plastic chappy.

Installation was easy enough as I already had the faceplate removed and my phone line connected to the master socket.

My usual sync speed is about 448k with the throughput at roughly the same. After installation my sync speed has risen to 896k, but with the throughput still on about 500k. Any increase in speed would be brilliant; however it’s the stability is what I really am looking for as disconnections have my ip-profile capped at 135k more often than not. My ISDN was faster!!!

BT & the government really need to sort this out. We pay extortionate prices for poor services unless we live on top of an exchange or in a city. And being rural means you are stuck with BT. No fibre optic and no cable, no choice!

I will report back in about 14 days with a true reflection and review of the iPlate.

I was delighted initially to get a doubling of speed from 3.3 to 6mb/s plus. But gradually the speed has dropped backed to 4.2 mb/s. Okay thats still a third up on where it was and is very stable, with i-player being trouble free at 4.2 mb/s. Talktalk say my line wont take more than 6.54mb/s and I very nearly got that initially so it must be the exchange end that is throttling the line speed down.I think the i-plate is still well worth 7.50 for the 30% plus increase but its irritating that talktalk wont allow it run at 6.54 (its stated maiximum speed) at all now. I have emailed a stiff complaint but Im still awaiting any kind of response. When you remove the line speed issues at the customer end it looks like some ISPs are struggling to cope with the added capacity.. So its 5 star but with qualifications.

Although not actually increasing my speed, which was already ok at 7mb, it did stabilize the connection, significantly to the point that is was no longer intermittent.

Anyone suffering speeds vastly under what they pay for, should contact their isp, check their setup, and distance from the exchange.

Until i contacted my isp, i was receiving only 0.2mb dl, whilst paying for upto 8mb.

My problem seemed to fit perfectly with the deion of the typical setup that would benefit from the i-Plate ie. several internal sockets in 3 floor house with reduced speed on any extention. With the router connected to the master socket on the ground floor a speed of 9.2 MB/sec down, 1.06 MB/sec up, is recorded on speedtest.net, but plugged in to any other socket I get 4.7 MB/sec down, and 1.06 up. But it is a steady connection, with line outages very rare.

I installed the i-Plate last week and now get............. exactly the same readings on speedtest.net, so in my case it wasnt worth the effort.

I suspect I will end up moving the router to the ground floor master socket and using either wireless or powerlan adaptors to reach the other floors.

NOTE: The info tells you that the BT NTE5 socket has the BT logo in the top left corner, however my socket has no logo at all and this still fits. If you have a socket with a split faceplate and no logo remove the front cover and see if it has a test socket on the right.

After installation, which seems too grand a word for such a simple procedure, it is now consistently between 11.5 and 12, bang on the maximum. For a one off payment of £8 or so Id say it was well worth the effort.

All this iPLate does is disconnect the bell wire from being conencted to all extensions you have wired from the master socket. This wire can pick up interference like a radio aerial which means you end up with more noise at your router and so less speed.
If you DO NOT have any extensions off of your master socket this device will do absolutely nothing for you, keep your monry in your wallet.
If however you DO have extensions off of your master socket and have not already manually removed the bell wire from them all then you will probably receive a speed boost from the reduction in noise generated by your internal wiring.

I decided to try the i-plate, because I believed that I was not getting anywhere near 1mb.

before installing the i-plate I tested my download several times and was averaging 1432 kbps download and 372 upload, so things could only get better!

I installed the i-plate and immediately my download speed dropped to 1100 kpbs although the upload speed increased slightly to 378. Five days later and my download speed has increased again to 1432 - so no change.

When I first read about the BT i-Plate, I was excited at the thought of improving my download speed.

I measured my speed a number of times over the week before installation.

Curiously, each subsequent test increased in speed, suggesting that my laptop had learnt the download routine. (Is that possible?) The results eventually peaked and stabilised at about 6400Kbps.

Since installing the BT i-Plate, I have seen no increase at all against the 6400Kbps, despite numerous further tests at different times of the day, over a period of days.

I regret that I have to conclude that the i-Plate is totally ineffective and a complete waste of money.

Broadbandbuyer Comment "Sorry to hear your speed hasn't increased. If you're on an 8Meg ADSL then achieving 6Meg is very good already. To answer your question, the way the speedtest works the laptop shouldn't be able to learn the routine. We suggest using www.speedtest.net. Regards BBB"

If you want to know whether it will work for you access your router, try ://192.168.1.1/, login and got to ADSL status and under Data Rate note the down stream rate (3COM Router). Then take the front of your main telephone box and plug in to the socket behind (this disconnects any extensions). Then do as before. If the rate is much higher without the extensions then you probably need an I Plate.

My readings were 4096 without extensions, 1856 with and 3776 with I Plate fitted and extensions connected. Cheaper than a rewire

Im very pleased, and I think that most people would be if they bought one of these.

Final word: A friend of mine bought one, but only has a 1Mbps line (throttled) from Tiscali. He did not see an appreciable change - but that is probably more likely to be a bandwidth throttling applied by the ISP. Hes thinking of changing to an up to 8Mbps ISP now.

I live not so far from the Exchange, the highest speed I can sync at is ~18Mbps (out of 24Mbps from BE) when connected to the BT Master Socket. But unfortunately the location of the Master Socket is not ideal, near to the house entrance door. So I have to plug in my router to an extension socket in the living room.

As its an extension socket, it sync speeds vary wildly, between 8MBps to 18MBps. Basically to get 18MBps I have to keep re-syncing the router.

So I ordered the IPlate and give it a whirl, not that I really need it (or just being greedy), received it this morning, installed it within 5 mins. And the result? Im syncing at 19.5MBps now... and through the extension socket to boot! I thought it was a fluke... so I restarted my router to re-sync.... and its still holding on to 19.5MBps!

So, this arrived the next day, took a min or so to fix, then back to check the speed. Now, fair enough, the upstream didnt change, but the down has gone to 7648. Why did noone tell us about this earlier? I have spent hours waiting/talking to Toucan/Tiscali about line faults, modem checks and router checks, when all I needed to do was buy one of these! Someone should tell them......

My route/modem is on an extension wire and we are over a mile from the exchange. Speeds before were rarely more than 50-600mbps at best. Almost immediately after they rose to between 1200-1450mbps and seem to be staying there. A significant improvement for loading picture laden websites like Amazon or Lakeland Cam which I visit regularly. Probably about as good as I can expect on a rural line that ony allowed broadband at all quite recently. Does what it says and a wothwhile gizmo.

My router is connected to a slave socket. I fitted the iPlate to the master. Fitting it is simple, but the supplied screws are too long and cannot be tightened properly. After fitting, my router immediately registered a significantly better figure for Noise Margin - from 12-13db to 24. This means that there is scope for improving the speed of the connection. Speed did not improve for me, but I found that this was because the ISP had me on a fixed 512kbps connection. When they switched me to ADSL Max, which is rate-adaptive, the download connection speed immediately improved to 2880 and actual speeds improved a few hours later when the exchange amended my IP profile. So an excellent result in my case.

Be aware that in a number of cases (possibly small) the iPlate may reduce performance. Fitting an iPlate in my case reduced speed initially to 50% and it only recovered to 70% of pre iPlate speed. BT offer no explanation except that the particular iPlate may be faulty. Also note that the thread on the screws supplied with the iPlate is courser than the thread holes in the socket. If you decide to remove the iPlate as I have, your old screws may not therefore tighten down properly. Best to test iPlate taped on before committing to screw it on.

The self-tapping screws supplied to fit the iPlate didnt fit - they
were too thick, and wouldnt self-tap into the brass inserts in the

The house wiring was connected to the master socket via
connectors on the back of the removable sub-plate. Two of these broke when I removed the sub-plate (I guess that they had been there a long time), and without the proper insertion tool, it was impossible to refit them. I ended up connecting a standard phone cable plug to the free end of the house wiring using 5A in-line connectors normally used for connecting up lights, then bringing the new plug on its cable outside the master socket, and plugging it in to the socket on the front face. This worked OK.

An hour later, the broadband speed hasnt changed at all - from
an average over the last week of 3.7Mbit.s, two tests have just
given exactly the same average.

Ill leave it in place for a week and see if it makes a difference,

Whats the problem?
Your broadband connection is nowhere near as fast as its supposed to be.

How does this help?
It fits into your main phone socket, and claims to reduce line interference and therefore broadband speed..

Should I buy one?
If you care about your broadband, yes. We sceptically plugged it in, which took seconds, then noticed around a 2 meg increase, from around 5meg to a peak of 7.7 meg as measured (three times) by www.speedtest.net.

The iplate works great and improved my connection speed from 113 kbps to 928 kbps.

I have fitted several other iplates for friends with excellent results and only found one problem so far, which was with the telephone extension wiring. Some numpty had connected all the pin connections on three extensions within the house and you ony need to have two wires connected. Any other connections will cause noise on the line and ADSL does not like noise.

To improve the iplate even further check your telephone extension wiring. You must ensure that all extensions only have two wires connected to pins 2 and 5 only. Disconnect all other wires when you have a standard BT line with simple extensions. This will improve the SNR even further and improve the performance of the iplate. Any modern telephones will work fine and do not require connection 3 within the junction box to make them ring.

Now bearing in mind I am over 6 miles from the exchange and most ISPs say I cannot get broadband this is brilliant. I am about to order 3 more for my friends so watch this space. One word of warning, be very wary of the supplied screws, they are self tappers and not M3. On screwing everything back together mine stripped the Brass thread in the master socket. Now they will not release and just spin round, even applying back pressure on the faceplate makes no difference. The only way I can release the screws now is by drilling the heads off.

was consistently around 32% to 35% and it averaged out at 34%.

But I agree with other comments that it wont work for everyone
- I tried with some neighbours and friends systems and none
saw an improvement - some because they were already getting
good speeds (6mbs+) and in one case because the main BT
socket seemed to have already been modified to take out the bell wire.

So, if you can try before you buy, do so - but if youre not getting

I read reviews of the iPlate a while back (in PC Pro).
I look at getting one, but wasnt sure about fitting it (sounds stupid now), as it sounded like it was a complex bit of kit.

How wrong I was, its as easy as changing a light bulb.
Remove the front plate, slide into place, re-fit the front plate and your done. It literally took 30 seconds (after finding a screwdriver :-P ).

I only fitted last night so my ISPs profile hasnt updated just yet, but my sync speed has improved a lot.

Was 2,600kbs (on the router, 1,800kbs on speed tests)
Now 5,300kbs (on the router, my ISP needs to change the profile before it kicks in).
Thats twice the speed for £12 including P&P.

My upload has improved about 20kbs, but its the download Im interested in.

Great job Broadbandbuyer, I ordered it on the Tuesday it arrived on the Wednesday (and that was standard delivery !!!).

I would recommend Braodbandbuyer and the iPlate to anyone.

I had to replace my BT master socket to get one of these in place. I was a bit worried about that but the whole job was straightforward. Was getting 2mb/sec before & 2 mb/sec after. After fitting it, I contacted my internet service provider & they said they were unable to increase speed due to poor BT lines between the exchange & my house. I believe them but it's a bit tragic because the current service is supposed to be 8mb/sec & they are just about to increase it to a theoretical 24mb/sec free of charge. But it won't be any use to me because of good old BT.
My ISP is Utility Warehouse & they are very good. All my other gear is very modern & well set up so it really is due to the BT lines.
This might be good for some folks but made no difference for me.

I then fit the i-plate in under 2 minutes, left it for a few more minutes and turned pc back on, ran speedtester again and was amazed, my DSL connection rate is now 3968kbps, thats a 100% increase and it shows.

A few points. Dont throw your filters away as one correspondent suggested. The iPlate works with the filters for best effect. iPlates are only effective if youve got extension wiring on your broadband line.
The iPlate is a BT iPlate. Its main effect is to remove electrical interference, which helps stability and may allow more speed as a consequence. Good innit.

I was torn between buying this or just the normal BT-iPlate and boy am I glad I chose this, it does exactly what it says on the tin but even better. Installation was a breeze, I chose to wire in my phone extension following the included instructions and it works perfectly since I only need the adsl signal for my PC, the connection is awesome, my speeds increased from 2 or 3mb up to nearly 6mb, not all the time but more often than it ever did. And all this with the added bonus of getting rid of the clumsy filters we are normally provided with when we sign up to broadband. I say give this a try, for the money you will not be disappointed.

Since moving into our new build property I had noticed a gradual decrease in the performance of my demon adsl. From an original download speed of around 4500 Kbps it decreased to 2500 Kbps over the period of a year (I believe due to interference from other wifi signals)

Since installing the iplate download speeds are up to 5056 Kbps. So a 50 % increase than what I was experiencing and a 10% increase over my original max speed.

I live a long way from my nearest exchange so my broadband speeds have always been limited - ANY improvement is always welcome...

I installed the iPlate on Thursday and immediately saw my Netgear DG834GT router connection increase from 1600kbps to 2912kbps! UpStream speed was unaffected. "Speedtest" indicated a download speed of 240kbps which was no different to my pre iPlate istallation.

On Friday (iPlate+1), "Speedtest" also showed an average download speed of 240kbps - still no different to pre iPlate speeds.

However, on Saturday (iPlate+2), "Speedtest" measured 1500kbps - bear in mind this was measured on Saturday so Im expecting even better actual download speeds during quieter periods. This confirms the suggestion that it takes a few days for your BT line profile to be automatically updated.

So, in summary, for the grand cost of £9.99, I saw my REAL download speed increase from a lowly 240kbps to over 1500kbps! Thats a five-fold increase!

I bought an i-Plate after reading about it in the Money Saving Expert weekly newsletter. At just £10 I thought it was worth a try, and to my amazement it actually works! I’m on TalkTalk broadband free "up to 8 Meg" service. Here’s the before and after stats:

BEFORE:
Modem Sync: 3355 kbps Download; 506 kbps Upload
Speedtest result: 2.9 Mb/s Download; 0.43 Mb/s Upload

AFTER:
Modem Sync: 5283 kbps Download; 594 kbps Upload Speedtest result: 4.5 Mb/s Download; 0.51 Mb/s Upload

So, that’s a 55% increase in the download speed, for £10. If you’ve got telephone extension wiring in your house, and your broadband is slower than you pay for, try the i-Plate! It takes less than 10 minutes to install and might just be a tenner well spent. The only downside is that it makes your master phone socket stick out further from the wall, making it a bit ugly. Having said that, it’s a minor inconvenience, especially if the phone socket is hidden from view.
